- Brett Okamoto was born in Windsor, Colorado, where he was also raised.
- He attended Windsor High School and graduated in 2004. During his last year of high school, he wrote for two newspapers: The Greeley Tribune and The Coloradoan.
- Brett then went on to attend the Colorado State University, where he studied journalism. After he graduated with a degree in Journalism and technical communication in 2008, Brett started becoming interested in actually making sports journalism his career. Actually, he had been interested in sports journalism since he was in fifth grade.
- While at Colorado State University, he got on the team of the student newspaper, The Rocky Mountain Collegian. He remained on the newspaper team throughout his time there and was even the sports editor during his junior year.
- Brett is married to his wife, Jessica Detterer. They have a son together, Kamryn, who was born in July 2020.
- Currently, he resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife Jessica and their son Kamryn.

- During his senior year at Colorado State, Brett was selected as one of the fifteen student correspondents selected by CNN to write about their local communities. Some of his stories were featured prominently on the CNN website.
- After his graduation from college, Brett spent two and a half months in New York City as an intern at Sports Illustrated. During his time there, he was a fact-checker for the magazine.
- Following his internship in New York City, Brett moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he worked as a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun, one of two daily newspapers serving the Las Vegas Valley & owned by Greenspun Media Group. Here, he covered many sporting events there but started reporting on the emerging Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His reports helped make the sport popular in the city that now hosts its biggest events.
- In 2010, a year after he got to the Las Vegas Sun, Brett was offered a job by ESPN.
- Since then, he has been working at ESPN as an MMA reporter and feature writer. In this role, he’s involved in all aspects of reporting, such as producing, editing, creating podcasts, and keeping on top of social media. He also has to do a lot of running around to find the biggest news to break in the sport.
- Brett appears regularly on several MMA shows on both ESPN TV and ESPN Radio and has also written for ESPN’s Magazine. One of his most popular radio appearances was when he discussed the most-anticipated bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor Mcgregor, and how viewership will compare to the previous Mayweather and Pacquiao fight.

- Brett had a corgi named ‘Tulo’ and now has another corgi named ‘Gordon Bombay’.
- He’s stated that he never expected to be on camera so he never took video classes while at university.
- Writing is still his main passion but he also enjoys being on camera.
- Brett loves to travel with his wife Jessica, and he also enjoys playing softball with her.
- He frequently reads stories to his son Kamryn.
- Brett is a proud supporter of the Colorado Rockies, a professional baseball team based in Denver.
- Since 2017, Brett has starred as a reporter in numerous TV series, such as ‘Get Up!,’ ‘SportsCenter,’ ‘Ariel & The Bad Guy,’ and ‘Mike & Mike.’
- He is also the host of the podcast ‘5ive Rounds,’ where he discusses and breaks down each specific MMA bout.

- Brett voted that “Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis” was the fight of the year in 2018. The fight itself only lasted two rounds & was quite one-sided, with Ferguson landing nearly three times as many strikes as Pettis.
