Capcom’s latest action-horror game, the Resident Evil 4 remake, might just be the fastest selling Resident Evil game of all time. On March 29, Capcom confirmed that the hotly-anticipated Resident Evil 4 remake has sold over an incredible three million units in the first two days of release via this press release. Available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, this incredible figure marks a new high for the series that already boasts incredible sales figures for it’s more-recent games and reportedly takes the cumulative number of units sold for the RE series up to over 135 million.
We know selling three million units in the first 48 hours sounds like a lot – and it is a lot – but how do these numbers compare to the rest of the franchise? We can say a game is the fastest-selling Resident Evil game, but how do you know?
Well, the recent release of Resident Evil Village saw Capcom sell over three million units in the first four days – so, twice as long as the Resident Evil 4 remake – making it the third-fastest selling Resident Evil title, tied with the Resident Evil 2 remake. You can find out more about the Resident Evil 2 remake sales here.
Interestingly, PushSquare claim that Resident Evil 5 shipped four million units in a similar time frame (putting it second) but, this report from Games Industry Biz seems to suggest that figure was taken from several weeks – not the four days used to discuss Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 2 remake.
Still, while Resident Evil 5 appears to be the best-selling Resident Evil game overall (if you count the various special editions released for it) these numbers don’t quite compare to the incredible reception the Resident Evil 4 remake has seen in the first two days. The original release is regarded as one of the best horror games out there, but it’s clear to see that Capcom’s changes have enticed people back – alongside the flashy new graphics and updated mechanics, of course. We do wonder if the varying Resident Evil 4 remake difficulty levels have anything to do with it, too.
But, we can only imagine that it’s all of the above and more. Just take a look at this trailer:
Capcom has said that it “remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all stakeholders by leveraging its industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences” in its’ press release. So, we will most-likely see more Resident Evil games – and maybe more remakes and remasters – down the line. For now, though, we’ll just have to spend our time trying to pick up Resident Evil 4 Spinel – which isn’t as easy as it sounds.
